Sydney slipped out of his shoes, then removed his jacket, placing both neatly in their places. He walked to his chair, leaving his cellphone laying on the little table beside the chair. He picked up the newspaper, beginning his attempt at unwinding. Neither the TV nor the radio were turned on, not yet, as he sought to remove himself from the life of his duplicity. He knew, were he to ever attempt to leave the Centre, as Jarod had done, he would not be cagily chased and brought in; he would be killed.

It was a chain on him, )

[locked from all]

Patients in therapy have been known to speak of a cold sweat when their nerves coincide with events to create a conflict.

I knew that moment, the instant Broots told me of the intrusion on SL27, what those patients meant. I had finally overcome my lingering ethical debates between the good that could be done, and the wrongs definitely in progress to end SL27 for once and all.

Only it was not clear of human life. Specifically, the young man I had been gifted with the chance of stimulating to remarkable heights of intellect and ability had broken in for some unfathomable, to me, reason.

I had to warn him. To be responsible for his death would compound the guilt I had carried over Jacob for so long to something unbearable.

I got down there too late...such a cliché, too little, too late...and yet...

Better to burn in the holocaust I had wrought, then to lose the only people I had to care for any longer and survive.
